How to Find Momentum Stocks

Finding momentum stocks starts with identifying meaningful price strength, relative performance and constructive market behavior. A systematic process helps separate genuine momentum from temporary price spikes and creates a focused research universe rather than simply chasing the day's biggest gainers.

What a Momentum Stock Screen Is Looking For

Learning how to find momentum stocks is learning to run the same short screen every week. The momentum stocks guide explains what momentum is; this page is the practical search. A good screen looks for five things at once: price strength, relative strength, rising participation, a constructive trend structure, and momentum that is emerging or sustained rather than already stretched.

How to Find Momentum Stocks in Five Steps

Zooming in from the whole market to the strongest sector and then to the strongest stock inside itZooming in from the whole market to the strongest sector and then to the strongest stock inside it

Step 1: Read Market Direction and Sector Strength

Start with the market, not the stock. Note whether the main index is above its rising moving averages, then rank sectors and industries by recent relative performance. Momentum is easier to find, and more likely to last, inside the strongest groups. The goal of this step is to narrow the research universe before you look at a single ticker.

Step 2: Run a Stock Screener

A large grid of stocks filtered by price, relative strength, volume and structure until only three strong candidates remainA large grid of stocks filtered by price, relative strength, volume and structure until only three strong candidates remain

A stock screener turns thousands of stocks into a short list. Typical starting filters, shown here as an example to adapt rather than a fixed rule:

  • Price above its 50-day and 200-day moving averages
  • Trading within about 25% of its 52-week high
  • Relative strength in the top quarter of the market over three to six months
  • Average daily volume high enough to trade easily, for example above 500,000 shares
  • Share price above a level you are comfortable trading, for example $10

Finding momentum starts with a screen, and our guide to momentum screeners explains what to look for in a first one.

Step 3: Confirm Relative Strength and Volume

For each name on the list, compare the stock with its benchmark and with its sector. A stock should show its own evidence of strength rather than being chosen only because its group is strong. Then check participation: up days on rising volume and quieter pullbacks suggest real demand behind the move.

Step 4: Check the Chart Structure

Open the daily chart. Look for higher highs and higher lows, tight consolidations, clean breakouts and continuation behaviour. Use moving averages as trend references and RSI or other momentum indicators as context, never as automatic buy or sell signals. Reading price structure covers this step in depth.

Step 5: Judge Momentum Quality and Build the Watchlist

A stock can jump on one news event or unusual volatility, so judge whether momentum is:

  • Emerging
  • Sustained
  • Supported by structure
  • Supported by participation
  • Becoming excessively extended

The names that pass move to a short watchlist. The objective is not the stock with the largest percentage gain; it is meaningful strength that deserves deeper research.

Finding a Momentum Stock Is Not the Same as Finding a Trade

Finding a momentum stock is the beginning of the research process, not the end. A potential trade still requires evaluation of structure, entry conditions, risk, market context and the specific setup.

Momentum can weaken, breakouts can fail and strong stocks can become extended. The purpose of screening is to create a qualified research universe—not an automatic trade list.

Momentum Stock Research Checklist

Before moving a stock into deeper research, consider:

  • Is the stock demonstrating meaningful price strength?
  • Is it outperforming a relevant benchmark or group?
  • Is the price structure constructive?
  • Is trading participation supportive?
  • Are the market and sector conditions reasonable?
  • Is momentum emerging, sustained or excessively extended?
  • Can the potential risk be clearly evaluated?

From Screening to Deeper Research

A screen can identify candidates, but deeper research determines whether a stock deserves further attention. The next stage is to study the company's business, financial characteristics, catalysts, valuation, technical structure and relevant risks. The HUMBLE BULLS process therefore treats momentum screening as a starting point for research rather than a prediction of future performance.

Frequently Asked Questions About Finding Momentum Stocks

How do you find momentum stocks?

To find momentum stocks, read the market and sector first, then use a stock screener for meaningful price strength, relative outperformance, constructive structure, trading participation and supportive market or sector conditions.

What should I look for in a momentum stock?

Look for a combination of price strength, relative performance, constructive structure, participation and developing or sustained momentum.

Are the biggest daily gainers always momentum stocks?

No. A large one-day gain can result from news, unusual volatility or temporary market conditions. Momentum research looks beyond a single percentage move.

How important is volume when finding momentum stocks?

Volume can provide useful context about participation accompanying price movement, but high volume alone does not establish bullish momentum.

Can technical indicators help find momentum stocks?

Yes. Indicators such as moving averages, RSI, Rate of Change, ADX and volume-based measures can provide supporting evidence when interpreted within the broader market and price context.

Is finding a momentum stock the same as finding a trade?

No. Finding a momentum stock creates a research candidate. A potential trade still requires evaluation of structure, setup, entry conditions and risk.
